55 years ago/May 26, 1967

After his arrival back to New York, UN Secretary General submitted his report about his visit in Cairo. US President Lyndon B. Johnson met Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs Abba Eban. Johnson tried to get some guarantee that Israel wouldn’t attack her neighbours. He tr to persuade the Israeli side to concentrate on the diplomatic efforts.

Gamal Abdel Nasser, President of the United Arab Republic (Egypt) told to a group of Arab trade unionists that the basic objective was to destroy Israel. He called the US “the main enemy”, he also said, that the UK wouldn’t do anything without the US. He praised Charles de Gaulle for not following the Anglo-American line.
